Learn all you need to know about c-pap chin straps and
how they can help you get a good nights sleep. Find out the names of the top selling c-pap chin
straps.
Choosing the correct chin strap, one that is comfortable enough to wear throughout the night, can
make or break your experience with a C-PAP machine. Many ‘mouth-breathers’ cannot do without a chin strap,
others do not like them at all. If you are a ‘mouth-breather’, you would be well advised to try a CPAP Chin
Strap. Indications that you are a ‘mouth-breather’ include a dry throat in the morning, and the water level
in the CPAP humidifier decreasing significantly overnight. Your partner complaining about your snoring, or a
hissing noise coming from your mouth are good indications that you need a chin strap
too.
Using a C-PAP Chin Strap with a C-PAP machine can make the difference between a great night’s sleep
and a bad one. A chin strap is designed to support the chin, keeping the mouth closed so that the closed
system the CPAP machine requires to create positive air pressure in the windpipe remains intact. If the mouth
falls open during sleep, air pressure can escape via the mouth, making the CPAP machine less
effective.
There are numerous styles of C-PAP Chin Straps for sale here. Your choice will depend on
personal preference, as each style has its fans, for different reasons. It is a good idea to try out the
different styles with your CPAP mask at your sleep doctor or clinic before making a
purchase.
There are two basic types of C-PAP Chin Straps – adjustable and non-adjustable. In addition, there
are different materials and even different colours available.
Non-Adjustable Chin Straps
The first category of chin strap is the non-adjustable chin strap. One popular version is about
three inches wide, usually fabric, and said to be more comfortable than the straps with a chin cup. It
encircles the head, and is easy to put on and take off. The breadth of the band provides ample support for
the chin. The Respironics Deluxe Chin Strap Is a popular strap of this type.
Another version has a chin cup with narrower bands. The chin cup can be fabric, which is soft and
comfortable, and these simple, affordable yet effective chin straps are part of cpap.com and Homecare
Warehouse’s range.
Tiara Medical Systems recently introduced their Ruby Chinstrap, which features a strap around the
back of the neck as well encircling the head. This style offers more security for those who move around a lot
when they sleep.
Flow Concepts’ Split-Top Deluxe Model is a wide band for better security and improved comfort. The
wide strap splits into two thinner straps at the top of the head, making this a secure but uncomplicated
alternative.
Some manufacturers offer different sizes, which can help with comfort, especially for the small and
larger sizes where one-size-fits-all can be a problem.
Most of the CPAP Chin Straps on sale here are made from Neoprene rubber, used because it is elastic
enough to stretch, while maintaining strength for the chin to be supported properly.
Adjustable Chin Straps
Both the single broad band and the three-point design chin straps are available with adjustable
Velcro tabs as well. This feature can greatly enhance the comfort of the chin strap. Some CPAP Chin Strap
users find that, as they become accustomed to sleeping with their mouths closed, they can loosen the
adjustable CPAP Chin Strap to merely act as a precaution, rather than a tight support. One problem mentioned
with the adjustable straps is that long hair can get tangled in the Velcro
overnight.
Respironics offer two varieties. The first, the Original Deluxe Chin Strap is the same width and
fabric as the Deluxe, but comes with two detachable thinner straps that can be used across the forehead and
around the back of the head for additional stability. The cpap.com version, the cpap.com Deluxe, is similar
in design. The Navillus Chin Strap from cpap.com has the thinner straps, with a chin cup, and is adjustable
at the Velcro fastening at the top of the head. Their Universal Chinstrap is an all-in-one strap, with
adjustable fastenings. Puritan Bennett and DeVilbiss manufacture adjustable chin straps that follow similar
lines to these chin straps. They are light and comfortable, but do not always stay securely in place
throughout the night.
Respironics’ Premium Chin Strap has a unique vertical design that provides more support. The
integrated chin cup is soft and comfortable. An adjustable support strap attaches to the chin strap above the
ear and wraps around the back of the head for more stability, ideal for active sleepers. These chin straps
can be quite bulky for people with small faces.
Resmed’s Sullivan Chin Strap fastens at the top of the head, where it can be adjusted for size. This
light chin strap has a soft cloth chin cup and is easy to take on and off.
Tiara’s Ruby Adjustable, made of ‘Breathe-o-Prene’, is similar in design to the Ruby, with the strap
around the back of the neck and around the head being adjustable in this model.
Choosing the correct chin strap, one that is comfortable enough to wear throughout the night, can
make or break your experience with a CPAP machine.
Your partner complaining about your snoring, or a
hissing noise coming from your mouth are good indications that you need a chin strap
too.
The C-PAP Chin Straps discussed here offer a range that includes all the types described above, at
affordable prices. Try one – it could make a world of difference to your next night’s
sleep.
